The Roma forward picked up a right thigh problem during training and did not work with the rest of the group at the Stadio Olimpico on Monday.
According to Argentine media, Lamela remains a major doubt for Wednesday night’s friendly in Rome.
Argentina have already lost Messi to a muscular injury, as he returned to Barcelona after meeting the Pope.
Balotelli has also left the Italy camp because of a swollen knee.
