Roma star Erik Lamela can’t wait for the “double emotion” of playing Italy-Argentina and meeting Pope Francis.

The friendly match has been organised at the Stadio Olimpico on August 14 as a tribute to the new Pope, who hails from Argentina and is a passionate football fan.

Both teams will meet with His Holiness in the Vatican the day before the game and it’s possible he will also be in attendance for kick-off.

“It is a double emotion for me to play in honour of the Pope and to wear the jersey of Argentina,” declared Lamela.

“I hope Italy and Argentina can provide a great game for everyone.”

Lamela and his Roma teammates arrived back in Italy today after the conclusion of their American pre-season tour.
