The youngster has gone into the summer with speculation over his future with the Nerazzurri, amid limited playing opportunities during the first two-thirds of the 2013-14 season.

However, in being handed a more prominent role by Walter Mazzarri during the closing weeks of the campaign, the 20-year-old has made clear where his commitment is.

“My priority is to stay at Inter,” Kovacic has told the Croatian Football Federation’s official Press office.

“Was I unhappy at the club? No, that’s not true. I had not played for part of the season, but I have always trained well and with regularity.

“Then closer to the World Cup I gained greater continuity in the team.

“For as long as I am wanted, I will stay at Inter and will always be available to them.”

Kovacic is training with the Croatia national team this month as they prepare for participation in the World Cup. They will open the tournament on June 12 against hosts Brazil.

“We have to think about every training session, and then go game by game. For the match against Brazil we will be ready, but let’s not forget Cameroon and Mexico.

“Anyway, we will have to give our best.”
