Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly feels it was “strange” Gonzalo Higuain didn’t say goodbye before joining Juventus.

Last season’s Serie A top scorer swapped Naples for Turin in a €90m move this summer, taking a secret medical in Madrid before signing for the Bianconeri.

“It was his choice, everyone does what they want in their career,” Koulibaly told SoFoot.

“What was strange though, is that he left without saying anything. In his place I wouldn’t have done that.”

Koulibaly then discussed his own career with the Partenopei, as he’s now in his third season with the club.

“It’s fantastic that these two years have gone past really quickly. I came here at 22, and the advantage at that age is you already have full fitness, so I could concentrate on tactics.

“Maurizio Sarri? I’ve progressed a lot with him, through his methods of working on the defence. He organises training sessions just for the defenders, and that allows us to improve a lot.

“Frankly it’s nothing like the training we did with [Rafa] Benitez, but we don’t regret his methods.

“I feel more mature than two years ago. There’s also the tactical point of view, in Italy they play a type of football where the role of the defender is very important.

“Naples? At first I heard the usual clichés like ‘it’s full of Mafia, it’s dirty, it’s a huge brothel…’

“The city is beautiful and I love it, I love walking on the waterfront with my son and my wife. Neapolitans are very open, they love life and they’re mostly Napoli fans.

“People recognise me, so I try to be nice and take photos. Of course it’s true that after a while I can get tired, but I can say that to the people and they leave me alone because I’d also like a bit of privacy.”
