Kalidou Koulibaly is ready to take the captain’s armband from Lorenzo Insigne as he reportedly makes an important contract decision.

The 30-year-old Senegalese defender, who will take part in this evening’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Egypt, is one of the most important players in Luciano Spalletti’s squad, being a consistently strong performer and a leader on the pitch.

As reported by La Repubblica, Koulibaly is the highest paid player in the Napoli squad, earning €6m net per season. His contract expires in 2023 and he’s considering spreading out his wages over a long contract in order to become a long-term icon for Napoli.

The Partenopei centre back has been with the club since 2014 and made 302 appearances for the side in total. He’ll become club captain once Insigne leaves on a free transfer in the summer.

The 30-year-old Koulibaly has made 19 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1687 minutes. In that time, he has scored two goals, provided two assists and helped the side keep 10 clean sheets.

  1. Like Mertens, Koulibaly is Napoli thru and thru. And I even agree with ADL, let Insigne go to Canada and become a circus clown for MLS. Like he hasn’t made enough off of the backs of his fans and supporters. I wish they could find a way to keep Mertens at the club. If not as a player in some capacity. He has given so much to the club and city. Hopefully this comment won’t be erased by FI.
