Juventus and USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie paid tribute to US sports journalist Grant Wahl who died while covering Argentina-Netherlands on Friday night.

Wahl’s death has shocked the world of football and thousands of messages from friends and colleagues have been poured in on social media since last night when the journalist’s passing was confirmed.

Reports claim he collapsed in the press box during extra time.

The USMNT released an official statement to pay their respect to the 48-year-old who was covering Argentina-Netherlands.

Juventus midfielder McKennie shared the same statement on his Instagram stories adding two emojis to highlight his sadness.

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup, and for this reason, he had been awarded by FIFA only a few days earlier.

The international governing body of association football also released a statement to pay respect to Wahl.

The 48-year-old had also worked for Sports Illustrated and Fox Sports and in 2009 he wrote the book ‘The Beckham Experiment: How the World’s Most Famous Athlete Tried to Conquer America.’

McKennie is one of the most popular football players in the USA and made his debut with USMNT in November 2017.

He’s gone on to score nine goals in 40 appearances with his national team.
