Juventus full-back Mattia De Sciglio has gone under the knife for surgery on the serious knee injury he picked up during the first half of the 2-1 Serie A win over Lecce last Wednesday.

The 30-year-old defender went down in agony while clutching his knee after half an hour of play and was in tears as he eventually carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

The club later confirmed that De Sciglio had suffered a torn cruciate ligament, putting a definitive end to his season with just four games to go.

The Bianconeri confirmed on Tuesday morning that De Sciglio had undergone surgery at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Bologna to repair the damage to his injured knee ligament.

According to the statement put out on the club’s media channels, the operation was successful and De Sciglio will soon begin the lengthy rehabilitation process once he returns to Turin.

The statement read: “This morning Mattia De Sciglio underwent reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

“The operation, performed at the Toniolo clinic in Bologna by professor Zaffagnini of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, in the presence of the Juventus club doctor, Dr. Freschi was perfectly successful. The player will begin the rehabilitation process in the next few days.”
