The Drughi section of the Juventus ultras posed on the steps of the Superga basilica with their flag, a banner showing a Zebra stabbing a Bull (the clubs of the two teams) and the motto: ‘We have been the real history of Turin since 1897. We tame the bull.’

The gesture has been widely condemned, as the Superga tragedy struck all of Italian and world football, wiping out what at the time was the best team on the planet.

The Grande Torino squad was flying back from a friendly match in Portugal when the plane crashed into the basilica on the Superga mountain overlooking Turin.

The crash killed all 31 people on board, including players, coaches and journalists, on May 4, 1949.

Every year, the current captain of the Torino team stands in the basilica and reads aloud the names of all those who perished in the tragedy.

“The lack of respect towards historic areas of memorial and gratuitous insults in institutional spaces are both manifestations that we condemn and that warrant no further comment.”
