Initially paired with Torino and Siena, it seemed as if a move to Sampdoria was likely before Lecce stepped forward.

"We'll close the deal with Lecce this week," agent Alessandro Lucci noted. "It's almost done.

"We wouldn't have had a problem with moving down to Serie B for Sampdoria, but the reality is that there was never any official talks with them."

The 32-year-old Sergio joined Roma in 2006 where he was the club's third choice until he became the No 1 in 2009-10.

He was handed a new contract in the Italian capital until June 2014 at the end of that campaign.

Roma have also sold fellow Brazilian 'keeper Alexander Doni this summer. He's left to join Liverpool.
