Eder was the danger man upfront and opened the scoring when he anticipated his marker, sliding to meet a Candreva low cross at the near post.

Villarreal equalised when Samir Handanovic only parried Nicola Sansone’s strike, but was beaten by the Roberto Soldado follow-up from close range.

Jovetic came off the bench and scored an absolute stunner, as he pounced on a poor clearance, flicked it up over a defender and then smashed a scissor-kick volley into the far top corner. The Montenegro international continue his remarkable pre-season campaign and had only been on the pitch for three minutes.

Mauro Icardi came off the bench for his first appearance of pre-season, having been injured in April, and made an immediate impact too. His sensational through ball released Brozovic to score with an angled drive.
