He later apologised for his actions but UEFA are expected to punish the World Cup winner with a three-match ban.

Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, Gattuso's agent Claudio Pasqualin said: "What's evident to me is that my client was gravely provoked by Joe Jordan.

"After having continually heckled him, Jordan insulted him with a phrase of the lowest order, saying: 'F***ing Italian b***ard'.

"For someone like Rino, who has a strong sense of Italian identity, I believe that this is the most cowardly and undignified of abuse."

Asked about UEFA's plans to take action against Gattuso, Pasqualin said: "As soon as we have news from UEFA will evaluate legally the best attitude to adopt."
