Joao Mario thanks “my teammates who helped me over the past five months” after his surprise return to the Inter squad.

The Portuguese midfielder made a surprise start in the 3-0 win over Lazio last night, having failed to play a single minute previously.

The 25-year-old declared in the summer that he didn’t want to return to the Nerazzurri after his loan spell at West Ham United, but he struck a rather different tone last night.

“The team played a great game,” Joao Mario told RaiSport.

“I thank my teammates who helped me over the past five months, just as they did against Lazio.
