The Portuguese midfielder joined the Nerazzurri in 2016, but he failed to impress in his first season.

He spent the second half of 2017-18 on loan at West Ham United, but the Hammers didn’t take up their option to buy him.

After declaring the summer that he didn’t like Serie A and admitting “there’s no fire inside me” to play for the Beneamata again, he failed to secure a move away and hasn’t played this season, not to mention he’s a pariah for the fans.

“All I want to do now is change those whistles into applause,” Joao Mario told Sky.

“It’s always difficult when your own fans whistle you, but I can understand why. I think there’s a problem with body language, sometimes it seems like I’m not there [on the pitch].

“It’s something I have to improve, because I have the desire to do well.”
