Bayern Munich have confirmed that James Rodriguez will leave the club this summer, freeing him up for a switch to Serie A.

Bayern had a €42m option to make James’ two-year loan permanent, but CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge conceded the Real Madrid midfielder did not want to stay in Bavaria.

“The decision has practically been made because James came to me before the end of the season and asked me not to exercise the option,” he told Sport1.

“Going against his will wouldn’t make sense. You shouldn’t commit to paying €42m for a player if you can’t offer him a starting place.

“James wanted to be a regular starter, but that’s not guaranteed here and I personally regret that.

“I’m a fan of his playing style, his left foot and goal ratio were extraordinary and he’s a top player, but it’s no use anymore.”

Rummenigge then ruled out paying the sum, only to sell him on for a profit.

“That wouldn’t be fair to Real Madrid and it’s not Bayern’s style. We don’t engage in trafficking here.”

Napoli and Juventus have both been linked with bringing the 27-year-old to Italy.

He ends his spell at Bayern with 15 goals, 20 assists and two Bundesliga titles.
