Napoli transfer target James Rodriguez was on the Real Madrid bench today, but didn’t even warm up during a 3-1 win over Celta Vigo.

The Colombia international returned to base after a two-year loan at Bayern Munich and was expected to leave this summer, but the Partenopei refused to pay €42m.

They are holding out for a loan with option to buy at the end of the season deal, while Real do not want to sell to rivals Atletico Madrid.

James made his first appearance on the Merengues bench this evening, but was not even asked to warm up throughout the 3-1 Liga victory away to Celta Vigo.

Real Madrid saw Luka Modric sent off and started Gareth Bale, another player who had been on Zinedine Zidane’s exit list.

Reports in Spain and Italy continue to suggest Napoli are confident they will get James Rodriguez on their terms by the end of the transfer window.

There were concerns he would be bumped back up the pecking order following an injury for Eden Hazard.
