The Paraguay international had been out on loan to Bournemouth and on transfer deadline day there were advanced negotiations for a move to Olympique Lyonnais.

“I am very happy and have been from the first day I started training here after the return from England,” Iturbe told Sky Sport Italia.

“In the last three days of the market there was talk of a sale, but my head was always here. I am very happy to have stayed at Roma and this is a strong squad.

“Luciano Spalletti asked me to work in the right way, to do what he asks and that’s all. I am the one who has to work on the field and help my teammates.”

Iturbe was speaking ahead of a friendly with San Lorenzo, the proceeds going towards earthquake victims in central Italy.

Because of this, yesterday both teams visited Pope Francis in the Vatican.

“It was a wonderful feeling. We all know what he gives to people. He told us he was very happy we organised this event for the earthquake victims. His smile is contagious.”
