With progression to the knockout stages of the World Cup on the line, former Nazionale full-back Mussi is in two minds over switching tactics now.

“It might work,” the 50-year-old, who played at USA 94 and Euro 96, has told Calcionews24 this week.

“But I do not think that the match against Costa Rica was a matter of formation, but rather a discussion related to the intensity and to the aggressiveness that our opponents had.

“Changing formation is obviously not a good sign because it means that something has not worked, but if the three defenders will be those from Juventus, then I think it may be the right solution, since they are a defence that is already tried and tested.

“De Sciglio and Darmian on the wings? They have the right characteristics to be able to assist the team, especially in their drive and their ability to provide playable balls to our strikers.

“If Italy are able to impose their game as they did against England then I think that they will have no trouble in winning the game, but a lot will depend on the intensity that we can maintain.”
