Italian sport is descending on London this Sunday, because not only are Italy playing England in the UEFA EURO 2020 Final, but Matteo Berrettini is the first Italian in the Wimbledon Final.

Berrettini blew Hubert Hurkacz away in the first two sets, including 6-0 for the second, then had a blip to lose on a tie-break in the third before commanding the fourth set too.

He becomes the first ever Italian – male or female – to make the Final of Wimbledon, and the first Italian man to reach a Grand Slam Final in 45 years.

Curiously, that too will be on Sunday, just a few hours before down the road in another area of West London, the Azzurri take on England at EURO 2020.

“I am so proud to bring the flag here,” said Berrettini after his Centre Court triumph.

Meanwhile, Italy also marked 2021 by winning the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time since 1990 and the band Maneskin had two simultaneous Top 10 singles in the UK charts.
