The Azzurri have won all five of their previous meetings, scoring 17 and conceding twice in the process.

The first tie between the two nations took place in December 1986 when the Italians left Malta with a 2-0 win.

Their only other visit to the nation came in December 1992 when Gianluca Vialli and Beppe Signori scored in a 2-1 triumph.

September’s qualifier in Modena was a tight affair. Mattia Destro of Roma gave Cesare Prandelli’s side an early lead and Federico Peluso made the game safe with an injury-time strike.

The other two remaining meetings ended in 5-0 and 6-1 Italy wins.
