Going into the quarter-final with Belgium or Portugal, Italy are considering changes with Nicolò Barella and Domenico Berardi at risk.

The Azzurri booked their spot at the Euro 2020 final eight thanks to a 2-1 victory in extra time over Austria at Wembley Stadium.

They needed goals from substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina to get the 12th consecutive win, and as it was the Atalanta man’s second goal of the tournament, they are now pushing for a starting spot.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Berardi could make way for Chiesa in the starting XI for the next round, although the Juventus winger can be kept back as a precious option off the bench to run at tired legs.

Roberto Mancini would have to bring him on earlier than against Austria, though, to make a real impact.

The big surprise is in midfield, as while the build-up to the last game was all about the choice between Marco Verratti and Manuel Locatelli, it’s Barella who is at risk of being left out of the next fixture.

The Inter midfielder did not look sharp against Austria and also received a yellow card for dissent, so is at risk of suspension if Italy reach the semi-final.

Locatelli and Pessina would therefore be battling to take over his spot, with Verratti and Jorginho now considered untouchable.

As for the defence, that depends on whether Giorgio Chiellini and Alessandro Florenzi can recover from injury, otherwise Francesco Acerbi and Giovanni Di Lorenzo can retain their places.

There is the potential for Rafael Toloi to be used at right-back as a more defensive candidate.

Italy (probable): Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Chiellini, Bonucci, Spinazzola; Locatelli, Jorginho, Verratti; Chiesa, Immobile, Insigne
