Inter are edging closer to a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League and coach Simone Inzaghi believes he can bring the Nerazzurri to the next phase, something neither Antonio Conte nor Luciano Spalletti managed.

This year seems to be the one for Inter, as the Nerazzurri sit second in Group D after back-to-back wins against FC Sheriff Tiraspol.

Inter thus surpassed the Moldovan side and sit second behind Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, while Roberto De Zerbi’s Shakhtar Donetsk are bottom with one point from the first four matches.

Inzaghi: ‘Inter made it look easy with Sheriff’

Inzaghi stressed Inter are ‘masters of our own destiny’ after the 3-1 win on Wednesday night and the former Lazio coach could do what his predecessors failed to achieve.

Last year, with Conte at the helm, the Nerazzurri exited after one win, three draws and two defeats and finished bottom in the group.

The exit in 2020-21 was the third consecutive season without a place in the knockout stages, as Conte’s men were relegated to the Europa League with a third place in 2019-20.

Napoli coach Spalletti was in charge of Inter in 2018-19, when the Beneamata returned to the competition and had a great start with 2-1 wins over PSV Eindhoven and Tottenham Hotspur.

But two defeats and two draws followed, stopping Inter from qualifying for the last 16.

Inter have been deemed a non-European team in Italy and during the summer it was expected to become even more difficult due to the farewells of Achraf Hakimi and Romelu Lukaku, who were key members of the Scudetto team last season.

Inzaghi’s men could celebrate a place in the knockout stages already in round five, if the Nerazzurri overcome Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Sheriff lose to Real Madrid in Moldova.

If Inter win the next game against De Zerbi’s men, they will be flying to Spain on December 7 with the possibility of finishing first in Group D, a complete European turnaround for the Milan side.

7 thought on “Inzaghi to succeed where Conte and Spalletti failed?”
  1. dangermouse you are right. The pathetic champions of Italy only defeated a minnow Moldovan club, unlike the mighty Rube who are now being schooled by Andreazzoli, Tudor and Dionisi. We Interisti are well aware we are not winning this competition but we will be back next year. Good luck playing in the Europa League Conference with Bodjo Glimt with farmer boy Allegri.
