Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi has affirmed that his side "need to break this taboo" against Napoli in Serie A tomorrow.

The Biancocelesti are riding high following their Supercoppa victory over Juventus, winning nine straight League games to sit third in the table, but Inzaghi says they need to be wary of a wounded Napoli.

“Napoli finished with 91 points two years ago and also finished second last season. They kept their whole squad and made other important investments,” he said at a press conference.

“They are a wounded team, in need of points, with a new and prepared coach. We have to play with maximum concentration. It would be a mistake to think about what could happen in a few months.”

The former striker then stressed his club wouldn’t rush into any purchases this month.

“There is open dialogue with the director [Igli Tare]. We are happy but are looking around.

“If we find someone who can improve us, we will sign them. If not, we will remain as we are.”

Despite beating Juve twice in the space of just two weeks, Inzaghi has remarkably never beaten the Partenopei.

“We have to break this taboo and we have what it takes to do it. We want to win against Napoli.

“The lads have understood what kind of game we are going to play, we will see what happens.”

The 43-year-old has become Lazio’s most successful coach since Sven-Goran Eriksson at the turn of the millennium.

“It’s been four exciting and emotional years here, one better than the other, with trophies and derby wins in semi-finals.

“If I look back I would like to do them again, but in football you have to look ahead and, in our case, we have to look towards Napoli.

“Surely, in terms of results, this is the most stimulating time, but I don’t forget moments from the past.”

Lazio have only sold 10,000 tickets for the game against Napoli, but Inzaghi doesn’t blame the fans.

“The game is not on Sunday, people have to work. There has been little time, between the Super Cup and what we are doing, to expect beautiful support, not just from the Curva but also the rest of the stadium.

“We need all our fans. The lads deserve a great audience for a difficult game.”
