“The team has to play the way it did before,” said the coach in his press conference after two consecutive defeats against Milan and Lecce.

“We probably aren’t as relaxed and enthusiastic as we were before. There are some objective difficulties and some refereeing errors affected the last few games.

“We have to be stronger than the difficulties, take it one game at a time. Unfortunately, I have been unable to rotate the squad and help the team during difficult moments, because of these injuries.

“Even then, we were in control of the Lecce match and a team like ours cannot concede a goal like the one for 2-1. We’ve got to get the incidents going back in our direction, despite everything.

“We haven’t been fortunate with penalties lately, as we had three against us, but it’s still all up to us. We have to be stronger than injuries or referees, we’ve got to get that enthusiasm back.”

Inzaghi also tried to take some of the pressure off his Lazio squad by essentially confessing the Scudetto race is over.

“If we have to, we’ll play a few of the youth team lads tomorrow. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has this calf problem and was rested again yesterday. With Lucas Leiva and Danilo Cataldi carrying knocks too, I am left with only Luis Alberto and Marco Parolo in midfield.

“Tucu Correa really wants to give a helping hand before the season is over, but of course he needs time to fully recover. He sprained his knee 18 minutes into the Milan game and had to play on for another 25 minutes, unable to run. We also had Bobby Adekanye, who played despite a lesion to his adductor.

“None of this should be an alibi, though, because we still should’ve brought home the points against Lecce. The important thing now is not to look at the other competitors, but at ourselves, pushing past the difficulties and obstacles.”
