Simone Inzaghi sees “some similarities” between his Scudetto-winning Lazio of 2000 and the current squad after they went top of the table. “I dreamed of this four years ago.”

The 2-0 victory was sealed by Luis Alberto and Joaquin Correa in the first half, although Bologna did have two goals disallowed using VAR after the break for handball and offside.

This extends their unbeaten run to 21 Serie A rounds and puts them top of the table, leapfrogging Juventus, whose game with Inter was postponed to May 13 due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

“If I’d been told we’d be here in Week 26, I’d have been surprised… At the same time, I felt very confident after pre-season training, I saw what the lads could give and were prepared to give,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We have top players who work hard, but we have a great group. It was tough for me to leave Denis Vavro and Felipe Caicedo on the bench today, but calculating the Bologna characteristics, it seemed right to use Luiz Felipe. I am glad the lads are mature and accept my decisions game to game.

“This was an extremely dangerous match for us, as we know Bologna’s strengths and the motivation provided by their coach. I thought we should’ve scored more goals in the first half, but then struggled a little after the break, as Bologna fought back.”

The Juventus-Inter match has been postponed, further clogging up the fixture list for two teams who are still in the Coppa Italia and Europe, so is it all going Lazio’s way?

“We won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa over the last three years, we’ve generally been in the region of the top four, so these are results that other clubs would love to have enjoyed. We’re not complete surprises.”

Inzaghi was in the squad that won the Scudetto in 1999-2000, so does he sense some similarities with the current group?

“I see a similar atmosphere. I see lads who care for each other, a coach that has to make dozens of difficult decisions every day that are accepted. I remember at the time, we all listened to what Sven-Goran Eriksson said and accepted his decisions.

“We are top now. I dreamed when I took this job four years ago of taking the club to success, of getting back into Europe regularly and we did that, of winning silverware and we won three trophies in the last four years.”
