The former Rossoneri hero has supported directors Paolo Maldini and Zvonimir Boban to help get the club back among the top teams in Italy but revealed they will “have to reset” and get “two or three” quality players every year.

“It’s bad, but unfortunately it’s nothing new,” Inzaghi told Corriere della Sera. “But I know [Paolo] Maldini and I trust him. I am sure that Paolo and [Zvonimir] Boban will get the club out of this situation.

“You have to reset, insert two or three of the right players every year and, above all, be patient.

“And you will need continuity in the management of the club.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived this winter and scored in his first full match since his comeback with the Rossoneri, as Milan overcame Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena last weekend.

The former Milan coach Inzaghi insisted Zlatan has already proven that he can pull the team forward with his presence.

“They’ve done well. He was needed,” Inzaghi said. “I played with him and I respect him a lot. He doesn’t need money or glory. If he’s back, it means that he believes he can make a mark.

“It seems to me that he has already shown this during his first games. Even during his debut, his weight was noticed.”

About his own future, Inzaghi has committed to the project at Benevento, currently top of Serie B with a 12-point gap down to Pordenone at second.

“I only see myself at Benevento,” he said. “I 2017 the sporting director Foggia called me.

“I had a lot of proposals, I chose Bologna. And he was looking for me six months ago, even if the situation was worse for me.

“They showed me respect when everyone wanted me, but also when nobody did. I will never forget this.”
