Pippo Inzaghi admits “this wasn’t the usual Milan” that fumbled a lead to lose at San Siro to Sassuolo.

Andrea Poli had given them the early lead, but Nicola Sansone and Simone Zaza turned it all around.

“Paradoxically, the match seemed almost easy in the opening 15 minutes, as we went in front and could’ve doubled our lead with El Shaarawy,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Paradoxically, the match seemed almost easy in the opening 15 minutes, as we went in front and could’ve doubled our lead with El Shaarawy,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Then it wasn’t the usual Milan, we have to blame ourselves for that. When a team is in the process of renewal, unfortunately that means going through these peaks and troughs.

“When you lose at home, there isn’t just one person responsible. We had trained well, but unfortunately these games always have hidden dangers.”

Inzaghi was asked about his choices, such as Michael Essien in midfield for Nigel de Jong and Alessio Cerci given his debut for only 25 minutes.

“We had won at Verona and over Udinese with Essien on the field. Unfortunately with bans and injuries we can’t give consistency to our line-ups. There’s always a risk when making changes and we must learn from these incidents.

“Cerci hasn’t played much this season and we need to take it slowly. He did some good things today, but we mustn’t think he is Milan’s saviour. I have to put him in the right conditions to give his best.”
