Giovanni Simeone had opened the scoring after seven minutes and the Sardinians held on to it until the 92nd, when Luis Alberto and then Felipe Caicedo after 97 minutes and 27 seconds turned it around.

This is the Biancocelesti’s eighth consecutive Serie A victory and puts them within three points of joint leaders Inter and Juventus.

“I think it was a strong performance, because it was not easy for us to react after going behind to a great Simeone goal, which came from a throw-in,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We spread the play wider in the second half, put lots of crosses in and I feel it was a deserved victory in the end. The substitutes were decisive.

“I think the extra time awarded was fair, because the rules are there and they were applied accurately. I have to tip my hat to Cagliari, they are very organised, play with pace and I feel they will be very difficult to beat.

“I also believe we deserved the win, because my lads remained clear-headed, focused and not affected by the passionate atmosphere.

“If you get eight wins in a row in this current Serie A campaign, you need quality, organisation, effort, soul and also cool heads. I am fortunate to have players who train really hard and today the three substitutes made the difference.”

Lazio are now solidly in third place and only three points off joint Serie A leaders Inter and Juventus.

“I always said our Scudetto would be a top four finish. It’s only right that we look upwards, because eight wins in a row are not a fluke, they are thanks to years of hard work and learning experiences that burned us, for example the defeats to Celtic in the Europa League.

“We analysed our errors, had a wonderful, open confrontation with the lads and there is a great bond between us.

“I am fortunate to have a club that over the last four years has never put me in doubt. My staff are with me all day, they all know how we work and what we do, that the players are with us and give all they possibly can.”

Lazio certainly hope to keep the winning streak going, because they will face Juventus for the Italian Super Cup in Riyadh on Sunday.

That is the trophy between the Coppa Italia winners and Scudetto holders.
