Simone Inzaghi looks back over his first season at Inter and hopes for even better in 2023. ‘It was a great campaign that could’ve become extraordinary with the Scudetto.’

The former Lazio boss was picked to take over from Antonio Conte in the summer of 2021, with a team that had just won the Serie A title, but lost both its talismanic coach and top scorer Romelu Lukaku.

He nonetheless steered them towards the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, pushing Milan to the very last round in the Scudetto race.

“I have to be honest, for a first season, we did very well,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We reached the Champions League knockout stage for the first time in 10 years, a moment the fans were waiting for a long time. We fought it out well with Liverpool.

“It was a great campaign that could’ve become extraordinary with the Scudetto.”

Now Lukaku has returned to San Siro on loan from Chelsea and Inter are again in the Champions League Round of 16, where they will face FC Porto.

This was thanks to second place behind Bayern Munich, having therefore sent Barcelona down to the Europa League in third place from their group.

“Our prospects for 2023 are that we want to win something. It’s wonderful to play and enjoy our football, but ultimately that is the objective,” concluded the coach.

Inter resume their Serie A season from January 4 with a showdown against Napoli at San Siro and currently sit in fifth place.
