Simone Inzaghi praised Lazio for “winning an important game, I think deservedly,” despite also complimenting Milan for their performance.

The Biancocelesti had not won this Serie A fixture since a Paolo Maldini own goal in 1989, followed by 11 draws and 18 defeats at San Siro.

However, Ciro Immobile and Joaquin Correa scored either side of a Bastos own goal to secure the victory, putting them in joint fourth place with Atalanta and Cagliari.

“We won an important game, I think deservedly, against a side that in my view had a good performance, but Lazio played very well and did everything to win,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia after the 2-1 result.

“We had a few injury issues in recent weeks, but I remained calm, because the team was focused and believed in its football. We were just unlucky and I knew the results would come if we kept playing that way.

“It’s a little premature after 11 games to talk about the table, but we are getting some consistency in terms of performances and results.

“We must work to remove a few distractions that can still prove costly at the back. We were a little unfortunate today on the equaliser, as it hit Bastos and went in. Nonetheless, we’ve got to improve our preventative marking and knowing when to close players down or back up to regroup.

“It was very important for us to follow the recent two victories, to respect a Milan side that had won on Thursday and I feel we did that. It wasn’t easy after the equaliser, but we wanted to break this 30-year taboo, especially as we won here last season in the Coppa Italia semi-final.

“I told my players we needed more hunger and determination than Milan.”

Inzaghi had been reportedly ready to quit Lazio over the summer, then there were reports of a potential dismissal a few weeks ago.

“I know what football is like. I never felt in doubt, as the club was always by my side. I reflected over the summer that after winning the Italian Super Cup and Coppa Italia, this team could still do better. I told everyone in pre-season that our duty was to raise the bar and improve ourselves constantly, because I believe in them.”
