Simone Inzaghi’s decision to bring off Alessandro Bastoni and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the first half of Inter’s loss to Udinese has reignited the questions over his substitutions.

The 46-year-old Italian coach raised eyebrows yesterday when he decided to take off both Bastoni and Mkhitaryan after just 30 minutes in the league clash against Udinese. This decision seemed to backfire as the team went on to suffer a 3-1 loss, another disappointing result and the Nerazzurri’s third loss in their opening seven league games.

As highlighted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, since his arrival to the Inter bench, Inzaghi has made 221 total substitutions. Of these, 43 involved players who were on a yellow card, indicating that the suggestion that he always brings off booked players doesn’t carry too much weight.

The player to have been brought off most whilst on a booking is Hakan Calhanoglu, whose been hooked eight times in the past after a warning. Just behind him is Nicolo Barella, taken off seven times to avoid a possible red.
