Simone Inzaghi admits the World Cup break brings ‘more concerns than certainties’ for Inter, but can finally rely on four strikers, including Romelu Lukaku.

The Nerazzurri face table leaders Napoli at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza tomorrow.

“There are more concerns than certainties, such a long break is something new for everyone,” Inzaghi said at a press conference.

“We’ve worked hard, those who arrived later from the World Cup are catching up, I am satisfied with everyone even if the condition can’t be the same for all.

“We are looking forward to starting again, last season’s fixture was an exciting match that gave us a boost for the following months. We know we’ll face a great team, the only unbeaten one in Europe.”

The Partenopei were in a similar situation when they faced Inter in Milan last season, being unbeaten at the top of the table.

However, they suffered a 3-2 loss at San Siro in November 2021 and eventually saw Inter leapfrog them in the table, ending the season in third.

“We finally have four strikers available, Lautaro arrived four days ago, but he is ok, Correa is improving, Dzeko and Lukaku trained with the team a bit more. We have two training sessions left and I will make my assessments,” continued Inzaghi.

Lukaku has only played five games for Inter this term, scoring two goals. He struggled with injuries in the first part of the season and even his World Cup campaign was disappointing with no goals scored in two appearances for Belgium.

“We know his qualities, his desire and his willingness to sacrifice,” said Inzaghi.

“He will offer us more solutions. We were the most prolific attack last season and now we are the second, my teams have always scored a lot of goals and hopefully, both Lukaku and Correa will help us improve.

“Lukaku is feeling good, same as Lautaro. Dutch players are doing well, Dumfries had a little problem but is coming back. Onana is quiet and has desire. There is enthusiasm, we want to play a great game tomorrow.”

Milan Skriniar is in talks to extend his contract with the Nerazzurri, but no agreement has been reached yet. His current deal expires in June and PSG remain interested in securing his services. Nevertheless, Inzaghi doesn’t seem bothered.

“I know him well, he is an extraordinary guy and is in love with Inter. We have many players with contracts expiring and I have a solid club working on all fronts,” he said.

Do Inter still believe in the Serie A title?

“Yes, 23 games are remaining and we want to recover lost ground against one of the best teams in Europe. It all passes from the pitch, we are a united group with extraordinary fans.”
