Inter legend Beppe Bergomi says Simone Inzaghi would welcome Romelu Lukaku back to the club ‘without thinking twice.’

The Belgium international returned to Chelsea in a €113m deal last summer but has failed to justify his price tag at Stamford Bridge, where he scored 15 goals in 44 appearances in 2021-22.

He has been pushing to re-join Inter in the summer and Beppe Marotta is in talks with the Blues, who are open to loaning the player to Inter for one season or selling him permanently in a player-plus-cash swap deal.

Inzaghi coached Lukaku for a couple of weeks last summer before the player decided to return to London. Inter legend Beppe Bergomi reveals Inzaghi was impressed by the 28-year-old and would be more than happy to work with him again next season.

“Inter missed Lukaku last season even if they played good football for many months,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“They missed a player who could hold the ball and a leader. Inzaghi has told me that he has never seen a player as strong as him. If he could choose, he’d sign Lukaku without thinking twice.”

It remains to be seen if Chelsea and Inter will manage to reach an agreement. Considering that the Nerazzurri are also in talks with Paulo Dybala, getting both La Joya and Lukaku would force the Serie A giants to sell one of their strikers.
