Pieri, a former international referee who is now working as a pundit for RAI Sport was heavily criticised by Inter fans on social media after claiming the Nerazzurri could lose the Milan derby by default.

“Most likely, Inter made a mistake using an extra in-play slot for substitutions. Darmian and Gagliardini came off the bench after 78 minutes, first slot.

“Sanchez entered one minute later, second slot. Then Young came in with the third slot and finally Vidal, with a fourth slot that is not allowed. Therefore, Inter could lose the game by default,” the former referee said.

Antonio Conte, however, had used the first slot to make three changes with Matteo Darmian, Roberto Gagliardini and Alexis Sanchez who replaced the likes of Christian Eriksen, Ivan Perisic and Lautaro Martinez.

The Inter coach had correctly used the three in-play slots for subs and Pieri had to apologise on Twitter.

“Today, during the program ‘La Giostra del gol’, I read a wrong report about Inter’s substitutions. It was a mistake and I made it clear during the program, I am sorry for the mistake,” Pieri claimed.

Inter beat Milan 3-0 and are the Serie A table leaders with a four-point lead over the Rossoneri.
