Inter are trying hard to convince Napoli to sell them winger Dries Mertens, but may not succeed in time for January.

The Nerazzurri already made a move for the Belgian last year, and then again last summer. Now round three is beginning, with sporting director Piero Ausilio having joined the player's agents in a meeting.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter requested the player starting from January but were met with a wall, as Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis does not intend to reinforce a competitor for the Scudetto at this early stage.

Nor is it possible to get a discount on the player, whose contract won't expire until 2018, unless an exchange player were added to the deal.

Mertens would reportedly welcome a move to Inter, as he currently only enjoyed five games as a starter with Napoli. He would also see a salary increase from his current €1.2m to almost €2m, including bonuses.

Should Inter fail to sign the player by January, they will likely make another try in the summer.
