Lorenzo Insigne is targeting a return to the Italy squad via Napoli and reveals Inter rejected him for being short.

“I don’t think Inter are in crisis, as Walter Mazzarri is a great Coach. He will certainly be firing up the squad to face us and they have great champions. We are going there to win, as we are Napoli and deserve respect, just as we respect Inter.”

The pint-sized forward spoke to Radio Kiss Kiss ahead of Sunday’s match at San Siro.

“I had a trial run with Inter when I was young, but they said I was too short. Thankfully Napoli came along and took me in.”

Inter have lost two Serie A games in a row, whereas Napoli have found their footing after a similarly poor run.

“We did well to stay united during a difficult moment, not to let our heads drop and always giving our all. We’ll always fight to the end for the Scudetto, as only six rounds have passed, but we must focus on ourselves and never pull back.”

Insigne started the season being jeered and criticised by Napoli fans, but broke his goal drought against Torino and burst into tears at the emotion of that moment.

“We created many scoring opportunities and the ball wouldn’t go in. Now luck is on our side. I am happy for the goal, as I felt like I was cursed for a while. My teammates always had faith in me, as even when I wasn’t scoring they were still close to me.

“It is my dream to be Napoli captain, but for now we have a great captain in Marek Hamsik and the armband suits him fine.”

Insigne has not featured for Italy under Antonio Conte, despite playing at the World Cup in Brazil.

“The World Cup was a great experience. Conte is making his choices, but I continue working with Napoli and will always give everything for this jersey. I’ll try to convince the Italy Coach in every game too.

“Rafa Benitez is a great Coach and he is helping me to improve in my defending too. As long as my legs and lungs hold up, I will always give 100 per cent. In modern football you don’t win if you don’t run, so the important thing is to work together.”
