Napoli missed out on qualification for the Champions League knockout stages, but Insigne – now captain ahead of Marek Hamsik’s proposed move to China – is confident of a strong run in the competition they last won in 1989.

“We have to start again from the path we took in the Champions League, which was interrupted, even if it’s tough to drop into the Europa League,” said the forward at a Press conference for Thursday’s last 32-first leg against FC Zurich.

“There was a bit of disappointment, but we must be able to put everything behind us and start doing well now.

“The captain’s armband? It’s a source of pride and responsibility, but I’ve always had those things because I’m Neapolitan and their first fan.

“I want to win some trophies here. When we make a mistake, they’re the first to support us.

“This team deserve a trophy and this year we can compete with everyone to win the Europa League.

“Goodbye to the League? We knew competing with Juventus wasn’t impossible, but we won’t give up.

“We know they’re a great team but we’re no worse than them. Unfortunately we’ve dropped some points on the road, but we approach every game with the same enthusiasm.”
