FIFA President Gianni Infantino insists “the federations are all clearly in favour of a World Cup” with possibly 48 teams.

Speaking at the International Sports Conference in Dubai, Infantino also hinted that video assistant referees (VAR) could one day be used at a World Cup after its implementation at the Club World Cup earlier in December.

“VAR? The tests have been very positive and it’s going in the right direction,” he explained.

“I’m still convinced about expanding the number of participating teams at the World Cup beyond 32 teams.

“Wer’e still considering whether to increase that number to 40 or 48 teams.

“A format of 48 teams would be played over the same period as the current format, and the federations are all clearly in favour of a World Cup with more teams.”
