The Netherlands midfielder will be out until September after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury last month.
But the 24-year-old has insisted that he will come back stronger than ever.
“There are worse things in life than this,” he told Dutch TV. "Of course it’s annoying that I have to skip the rest of the season and the World Cup.
“But I am just thinking about recovering as soon as possible and getting back on the pitch.
“I don’t know when I’ll be back – hopefully it’ll be soon. But in the meantime I am enjoying the support from the Roma fans. They have all been incredible.
“We’re really strong at the moment. I want to return soon and play in the Champions League.
“I am sorry about the injury, but a lot of players have suffered the same thing.”
