Inter captain Mauro Icardi defends Stefano Pioli after two defeats in a row – “five or six months of work can’t be deleted by one or two games”.

The Nerazzurri have lost their last two games, to Crotone and Sampdoria, and face their city rivals Milan on Saturday morning.

“I think the boss said it all, we’ve looked at everything and analysed what happened in the last few games,” Icardi said, sitting alongside Pioli in the Press conference.

“We’re working for the present and for the future, we need to put Crotone behind us because we have important games ahead of us.

“I can’t make promises, but five or six months of work can’t be deleted by one or two games. I don’t like to make promises, but you can see what we’ve done on the pitch since Pioli has been here.

“That’s what matters.

“It definitely wasn’t the right attitude [against Crotone], but nobody expected such a soft team. We were all angry, players and staff, we’ve seen the work we’ve done in recent months and that wasn’t an Inter performance.”

Icardi has gone three games without a goal, and hasn’t hit the back of the net in open away from San Siro since September.

“I think it’s a coincidence, I’ve never looked at it and I don’t remember the numbers from last year. Of course I feel better at San Siro with our fans.

“The important thing is to win though, even away from home.

“My job is to score goals, I’m not going to make excuses about tactics, I did well at the start but now I’m lacking goals.

“But you can’t always score all the time, I’m consistent I’ve scored a lot ever since I’ve been at Inter.”

Edgardo Bauza has been sacked as Argentina Coach, does the Nerazzurri captain expect a call-up now?

“The national team is a prize for me,” Icardi said.

“I’m very calm, I know that Bauza wanted to call me because I’ve seen the texts he sent [Javier] Zanetti. We’ll see who the Coach is, I’ll keep doing well to earn the national team.”
