The Argentine netted after only 38 seconds against the relegation strugglers this afternoon, then scored again in the second half as Luciano Spalletti’s team ran out comfortable winners.

Speaking post-match, the forward stressed his side know what they need to do to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

“It’s a perfect day, but not because of my goals,” Icardi told Sky.

“The truth is that we have given consistency to our recent performances.

“It’s obvious that I’m happy with the goal at record speed. We know what we need to do well.

“There isn’t long to go in the season and we want to reach the Champions League.”

Inter’s next match is the Derby della Madonnina against rivals Milan in midweek.

“We go into it with the right frame of mind. We will work as hard as we can in these few days.”

Icardi is impressed with the way Rafinha has settled into life at the San Siro since his arrival from Barcelona.

“It’s not a coincidence if we have changed with him on the pitch. He helps us a lot with his technique and quality, and we help him.

“You can see the difference.”

Icardi was also asked about his recent omission from the Argentina squad, amid speculation Lionel Messi does not want him as part of Jorge Sampaoli’s World Cup plans.

“I don’t know, I’m just doing my best for Inter. I see the national team as a bonus.”
