Walter Mazzarri recognised the lack of maturity in his Inter side and admitted his desire to give younger players a chance almost backfired.

The Nerazzurri defeated Serie B side Trapani 3-2 on Wednesday night to advance to the next stage of the Coppa Italia, but had led at half-time 3-0 and risked conceding a late equaliser in a nervous end.

“This game should allow us to reflect,” considered Coach Mazzarri at the game’s conclusion.

“At half-time I asked the team to manage the game, but I understand that this team must always be led by hand as they do not have the maturity to do it alone.

“Then there were changes, so a great turnover. I wanted to start the younger players because it is important for their career, but to want to do too many things at the end is wrong and I put our progression to the next round at risk.

“We now look for the match against Parma to assess how the team has digested the negative performance against Sampdoria.

“Before Saturday the team had done well, and on Sunday we will have a further check. We will evaluate from game to game from Parma.”
