Roberto Baggio says he is hoping Mario Balotelli will have more success at the World Cup than he did himself.

The 47-year-old was speaking to Radio Blu and also discussed some of Italy’s other prospects for the tournament in Brazil, saying he is hoping for a surprise selection by Cesare Prandelli.

“The national team? I think they are of a good quality," Baggio said. "Cesare is working very well, so I am sure they will do very well.

“I hope there can be a surprise in the team, although there are already great players there who can make the difference.

“Balotelli? I hope he does better than I did! He has great potential, he just needs to realise and understand his quality.

“Rossi and Insigne are two great players, but I just hope that Pepito is able to go to the World Cup for his efforts to get back. He reminds me a little bit of what happened to me.”

The former Fiorentina man was then asked about the Viola’s season, as well as the penalty miss by Alessio Cerci that would have secured Europa League qualification for Torino.

“Fiorentina have had a fantastic season. Montella has done a great job and deserves a lot of credit.

“Cerci’s penalty? A mistake like that always remains with you. The only people who understand are the people who’ve had the courage to take one themselves.”
