“In 2012 Club Leon gave me the great opportunity to be part of an historic team,” Marquez has written on his personal website this week.

“Many thought I was coming here to end my career and relax, but I had to repay the confidence that the team had given me and I knew this was the right place to do it.

“Today I can proudly say that as a group we have grown a lot and we gave joy to the fans having won two national titles.

“Now my career will take on a new path, with the responsibility of carrying to the top the name of my country. It was not easy to make this decision because there are so many emotions at play, but I’ve always been a man who is not afraid of certain things, and I could not turn down this opportunity at my age.

“You will always be in my thoughts, this is not goodbye but a see you soon. I will always be proud to have played for Leon!”
