Elseid Hysaj could “definitely” stay at Napoli for life, but “it’s too early to talk” about the Scudetto.

The Partenopei are top of Serie A, leading Juventus by a point, and face Atalanta in Bergamo on Sunday as the Italian top flight returns from its winter break.

“The time has come to give the Scudetto to the fans,” Hysaj admitted, speaking to Il Roma.

“There are still a lot of games left and we have to fight to the end for this objective.

“All the work we’ve done over this past three years has taught us that we can compete with anyone, regardless of the strength or quality of the opponent.

“Maurizio Sarri? He’s the most important part of the project, he’s given us the awareness that we’re strong. You can see from the outside that we play well thanks to this maestro of football, he’s improved us in defence and attack.

“It’s true that we play good football and don’t win things, but it doesn’t have to be that way. We need to stay humble and keep playing our football, then the results will come.

“If we’re leading it means we’ve improved compared to the past in terms of games against the smaller teams, we couldn’t beat them before.

“We started much earlier than everyone else and we beat Nice in the Champions League preliminaries.

“All that effort we’ve made has put us ahead of everyone, with Juventus who are chasing us. It’s thanks to hard work.

“For now we’re ahead of everyone, but we’re aware that Juventus have always previously been the strongest.

“Can we say the word ‘Scudetto’? It’s too early to talk about it, there are so many games to go. We need to think day-by-day. The world can change, but the dream has to stay.

“We’re all ambitious because we’re a close-knit group and haven’t won anything. We need to keep our heads down though, it’s not like we’re 30 points clear of second, anything can happen in football.

“We need to keep going like this, we got something wrong two years ago and one year ago. If you’re strong, you don’t have any dips.

“Now we have the right mentality to play every match like it’s a final.”

Hysaj was then asked if he’d stay for life in the current Napoli side.

“Yes, definitely. I imagined it like this, and this is how it is. I’m really happy here and it’s a great city.

“My €50m release clause? It’s they [the club] who decide it, I don’t decide the price. It seems like a lot to me, but then again the way football is going…

“I just think about myself, and then if someone comes in we’ll see what happens.”
