These clubs both won the Serie A title in their time, but were stuck in the bottom four, making this a tense relegation dogfight. The Sardinians were without a win since November 7, managing five points from 15 rounds, with Marko Rog and Riccardo Sottil injured. Toro had drawn all five games under new coach Davide Nicola, but had four players ruled out by COVID, including Antonio Sanabria and Karol Linetty.

Cristian Ansaldi and Nahitan Nandez drilled wide, while Joao Pedro twice forced desperate sliding blocks just inside the penalty area by Armando Izzo and Bremer.

Cagliari grew into the game after a tense start, Giovanni Simeone’s strike deflected off Bremer to skim the far post and Razvan Marin blasted just over.

Joao Pedro should’ve done better when scuffing the finish wide from 12 yards on a Gabriele Zappa assist and Izzo charged down Radja Nainggolan’s attempt.

Salvatore Sirigu had to intercept as Simeone came sliding in from six yards and on the resulting corner the header was just wide of the near post.
