Former Juventus defender Benedikt Howedes has left Lokomotiv Moscow and decided to retire from football at the age of 32.

The German defender played one season on loan at Juventus in 2017-18, before moving to Russia on a permanent deal from Schalke 04.

“I loved playing football until the end,” he told Der Spiegel. “It’s difficult to give up on this but maybe the coronavirus and the games behind closed doors were the messages I was waiting for to quit.

“The money is not that important for me, I’ve earned enough.”

Howedes only played three games in Bianconero and contributed one goal in the process, scoring against Sampdoria in a 3-0 win on April 15, 2018.
