Ibrahimovic had hoped to be back this weekend, but has sustained a new muscular injury to his soleus, which means he’ll be out for probably another month.

Rebic had been filling in as centre-forward, not necessarily his natural role, but he too is out with a foot injury.

All four strikers that coach Stefano Pioli called up are teenagers, specifically Lorenzo Colombo, Rafael Leao, Daniel Maldini and Emil Roback.

The most likely move will be to use Leao as a centre-forward, again not something he is entirely comfortable with, although Colombo is the only real Number 9 left in the squad.

For the occasion, 17-year-old Swede Emil Roback is also brought along to Reggio Emilia.

Jens Petter Hauge is expected to start with Hakan Calhanoglu in the supporting trio, with either Alexis Saelemaekers or Samu Castillejo.

Ismael Bennacer is still out in midfield, so Sandro Tonali is the only real candidate to partner Franck Kessie.

As for the defence, Simon Kjaer and Matteo Gabbia are also out, while Pioli does not seem to have much faith in Mateo Musacchio or Leo Duarte.

So much, in fact, that Pierre Kalulu – nominally a right-back – has been used in the centre of defence to replace Kjaer.

Milan (4-2-3-1): G Donnarumma; Calabria, Kalulu, Romagnoli, Theo Hernandez; Tonali, Kessie; Saelemaekers, Calhanoglu, Hauge; Leao
