Former Palermo director Rino Foschi has admitted that they beat competition from Juventus, Fiorentina and Real Madrid to sign Edinson Cavani in January 2007.

“We were already well placed when Juventus made their move,” current Padova official Foschi told Tuttosport.

“Our biggest rivals for him were actually Fiorentina and Pantaleo Corvino who wanted to take him to the Viola.

“Real Madrid also tried to sign him with some decision. Fortunately, the player’s agent was serious and kept his promise with us.”

Cavani was signed at a cost of €4m from Danubio after the Rosanero had to admit defeat in their chase for Alexandre Pato, who eventually joined Milan. “Internacional wanted too much for him…”

Uruguayan international Cavani joined Napoli in the summer of 2010 from Palermo – initially on loan for €5m, before being signed outright for another €12m.

Cavani is being linked with a possible San Paolo exit this summer with Juventus, Chelsea and Manchester City linked.
