The current Three Lions boss, who will face Italy tomorrow in a friendly, previously endured two spells with Inter and one with Udinese during his coaching career, and recalls his experiences with affection.

“There were so many great moments when I was in Italy – my favourite moment was when I was offered the job as manager of Inter,” Hodgson said in today's Press conference.

“I'm available [to name my starting line-up] but I won't,” he said, in contrast to Italy Coach Antonio Conte, who decided to reveal his full starting XI just before Hodgson's statements.

“Harry Kane will make his full debut and Wayne Rooney will captain the side.

“It is a time to experiment and look at other players.

“But you will have to wait until the game tomorrow to see my team.

“I think it is nice to see them [Rooney and Harry Kane] on the field together.

“I am pleased to see them playing together from the start.

“Harry deserves his chance. It is a great opportunity for players to show they really deserve their place in the squad – and show they can take the places of those in front of them.

“All friendly matches during qualification allow you to see where players are.

“It's an opportunity for players to impress both managers.”
