Gonzalo Higuain insists Napoli must not get too excited about being Winter Champions. “Being there in May is what counts.”

The Partenopei crushed Frosinone 5-1 and took advantage of surprise home defeats by Inter and Fiorentina to secure the mid-season crown, something they hadn’t achieved since 1989-90.

“It means nothing to be Winter Champions, it’s not worth anything,” Higuain told Sky Sport Italia.

“Being there in May is what counts. We are working well, there are another five months to go and we hope to continue like this.”

Higuain also broke his drought of penalties by converting today at the Matusa.

“The Coach asked me to take the penalty and I took it, but the whole team put in an extraordinary performance.

“We face every single match as if it’s a Final and what the other teams do is of no interest to us.”

In the first half of the season Napoli have won 12 Serie A games, drawn five and lost only two, one of which was the opening round at Sassuolo.

They are also the most prolific team with 38 goals, 18 of them scored by Gonzalo Higuain.

Including the Europa League and Coppa Italia, Napoli have won 19 of their last 26 competitive games.
